The article "Stream age kicks," focuses on how the music industry is changing drastically in terms of how we access our favourite tracks. The article discusses mostly the use of now downloaded and streaming content, which have been made possible since the development of the MP3 file and apps and sites such as Spotify and iTunes reducing the amount of physical copies consumers buy.
The article discusses how the music industry in 2016 was in 'flux,' suggesting that the music industry in 2016 was booming, artists which hadn't released albums in years such as Rihanna and Frank Ocean came into light releasing albums and singles predominantly through social media and streaming sites.
An example which the article discusses is Kanye West's album "The Life of Pablo," the album was originally going to be called "Swish" however he changed this a few days before the release date. As well as this, West also changed other factors such as adding and editing tracks on the album which eventually changed the whole concept of the original thought of the album. This was possible as West as he was releasing the album through streaming websites, therefore the files could be easily altered and changed even before days of the release.
West originally made the album a Tidal exclusive which is also known as "Windowing", another music streaming site which requires a paid subscription to access the content. Rihanna's album "Anti" and Beyoncé's album "Lemonade" also decided to make their albums a tidal exclusive as well as Rihanna allowing Tidal to have exclusive content for fans. All of these artists went back on the exclusivity of the content on Tidal and allowed other streaming sites such as iTunes and on the artists' websites available for download.
With all of the available streaming and downloading apps and websites, such as "Spotify," "Tidal," "iTunes," and "Deezer" there is a large competition between all of these sites for who can get the most money and most subscribers. There is a battle to be the last streaming service standing.
As well as the way people access music, artists are now changing the way they deliver their music to their audience. For example, music videos are now a huge aspect for artists not only for the artistic, creativity and promotional value but also for a new way to release music. For example, Beyonce's first 'Visual' album was released completely through the use of music videos. She opted for the same approach for her second visual album, "Lemonade," but this time premiered the full album in HBO before releasing it anywhere else. The music videos are now becoming part of the music instead of just another addition to the music.
For our project, the new way of listening, promoting and delivering music to the audience is much to our advantage. For a small artist such as ours, "Dakota," allowing to put music online and put music videos on sites such as YouTube allows for us to reach a much greater audience, widening the fans further. As well as this, it allows for our production team from "AAE" to make any quick changes or alterations before the release date of the music video ensuring it is to the standard we want it. Also, when releasing the music to our audience, we may choose to release it exclusively on a streaming site such as "Tidal," or "Spotify" to give fans on those sites first access, then after 3 weeks release it for everyone else on other streaming sites, CD and possibly vinyl as they're still purchased today as people enjoy having a physical copy of their music.
